How Much Does a Website Cost for a Tradesperson in the UK?

The real cost of a trade website in the UK: DIY builders, freelancers, agencies and subscriptions compared, including the costs people forget.

Ask five people what a website costs and you will get five answers, from "free" to "five grand". They are all sort of right, because they are talking about different things. Here is how the options actually compare for a trade business.

The figures below are typical ranges, not quotes. Prices vary a lot between suppliers.

Option 1: Build it yourself

Website builders such as Wix or Squarespace typically cost somewhere between £10 and £30 a month. You pick a template and fill it in.

Good for: a very tight budget, and people who are comfortable with computers and have spare evenings.

The catch: your time. Writing the pages, sorting photos and learning the tool usually takes far longer than expected, and most DIY trade sites end up as a single thin page that never ranks for anything.

Option 2: A freelance web designer

A freelancer will typically charge from several hundred pounds up to around £2,000 for a small business site, depending on size and experience.

Good for: getting a decent-looking site without doing it yourself.

The catch: what happens afterwards. Ask what hosting costs each year, what changes cost, and whether any SEO work is included. Often the answer is that the site is handed over and that is the end of it.

Option 3: A web design agency

Agencies commonly charge from around £1,500 to £5,000 or more for a small business site, with ongoing SEO sold as a separate monthly retainer on top.

Good for: larger firms with a marketing budget.

The catch: cost, and often a 12-month contract on the SEO side.

Option 4: A monthly subscription

Instead of paying up front, you pay a fixed monthly fee that covers the build, hosting, changes and ongoing work. This is how FOUND works: £99 a month with no setup fee.

Good for: trades who want it handled, want to spread the cost and want the site worked on after launch.

The catch: you are paying for as long as you use it, and with most subscription providers the website comes down if you stop. Check what you keep. With us, your domain name and Google Business Profile are always yours.

The costs people forget

  • Domain name. Around £10 a year for a .co.uk. Register it in your own name.
  • Hosting. Often £50 to £200 a year if it is not included.
  • Changes. Many designers charge by the hour for edits after launch.
  • SEO. A website on its own does not rank. Someone has to do the work that gets it found, and that is usually the biggest cost of all.

How to compare properly

Do not compare the build price. Compare what it costs over two years, including hosting, changes and SEO, and ask what you actually get for it each month. A £600 website that nobody ever finds is more expensive than it looks.

Questions to ask anyone you are thinking of using

  • Who owns the domain name?
  • What do changes cost?
  • Is there a contract, and how long?
  • What work is done after the site goes live?
  • What happens if I leave?
