How Long Does SEO Take for a Trade Business?

A realistic timeline for a trade business to start ranking on Google, what affects the speed, and how to spot a promise that is too good to be true.

The honest answer is months, not days. Google's own guidance says it typically takes from four months to a year to see the benefit of SEO work. Local trades in smaller towns are often at the quicker end of that. Competitive trades in big cities are at the slower end.

Here is roughly what to expect.

The first few weeks

Your new site goes live and Google finds it. Your Google Business Profile is set up, verified and filled in. You will usually start appearing when people search your business name. That matters more than it sounds, because it is what people do after a recommendation.

Months one to three

You begin to show up for searches that include your trade and your town, usually lower down at first. You may see the odd enquiry from Google. Rankings will bounce around from week to week. That is normal.

Months three to six

With new pages going up each month and reviews coming in, the positions firm up and start to climb. This is when most trades notice a real change in how often the phone rings from people who found them online.

Six months onwards

The work compounds. Each new service and area page is another set of searches you can appear for, and a site with history and reviews is much harder for a competitor to knock off its spot.

What makes it faster or slower

  • Competition. A plasterer in a market town will move faster than an emergency plumber in central London.
  • Where you start. An existing domain with some history has a head start on a brand new one.
  • Reviews. A business collecting a few genuine reviews a month climbs faster than one collecting none.
  • Consistency. Work done every month beats a big push followed by nothing.

What you can do to speed it up

The one thing in your hands is reviews. Ask every customer. After that, send in photos of finished jobs so there is always something new to add.

Be wary of guarantees

Nobody controls Google's rankings. Anyone promising "page one in thirty days" or "guaranteed number one" is either targeting a search nobody makes or telling you what you want to hear. Ask them which searches, exactly.

Need work right now?

If you need the phone to ring this week, SEO is not the tool. Paid adverts are faster, at a cost. We compare the two in Google Ads vs SEO for trades.
